The rain came down hard and fast, flooding the old backroads between work and home. There was one place that I actually seemed to be floating on the watery road. I realized it was just a matter of a bit more water before I would not be able to proceed. And. I felt out-of-control.
Isn’t this what happens when we come to the overwhelming experiences of life?
My father often directed me to Isaiah 43 when life seemed out-of-control:
When you pass through the waters,
I will be with you;
and when you pass through the rivers,
they will not sweep over you.
When you walk through the fire,
you will not be burned;
the flames will not set you ablaze. (Isaiah 43: 2, NIV).
Isaiah’s words make it clear we’re not immune from bad things happening. But. We can be sure when we’re in a hard place, we’re not alone. The key to facing overwhelming seasons of life is trusting God to carry us through the floods and flames.
While we may desperately try to take control, pushing back on the pain, fighting anything and anyone in our pathway, we will find nothing satisfies or for that matter helps, until we surrender it all . . . our thoughts, words, actions, emotions and attitude . . . taking God’s hand, gripping it with complete trust.
When we understand God is not only present but will carry us through it, there’s an amazing shift in our experience. It’s what has happened in the last year of my family’s life, we’ve experienced the pain of loss in all areas of life and the power of trusting God in everything. And. I can say with confidence that God is trustworthy, will never leave, and will always carry us through the floods and flames of the challenges. Yes, there’ve been times, we felt helpless but we learned to keep our grip on God’s hand. And. Just as Isaiah described the floods and flames did not overcome us. Even in the most painful places, we’ve experienced a profound peace which far exceeds the pain.
It comes down to a real choice.
- Will you let the challenges of life overwhelm you?
- OR. Will you trust God? Will you surrender control and take the divine hand of God offered to you? Will you trust God to lead you through the floods and flames of the challenges of life?
Here’s the answer that leads to the best life: Take God’s hand. Trust God to lead you, to be with you, and to carry you through the floods and flames of challenges. And. When everything gets hard–keep your grip on God’s hand.
Learning to Kickstart the day, gripping God’s hand.
