I’ve made it a tradition as one year ends and another begins to ask the proverbial question: “Where has the time gone?” As the years go by, time seems to be more elusive. This past week I’ve been reminded how important it is to live each day as a gift. A young woman from our faith community died the day after Christmas. It seems too soon. She had made a commitment to live with God in the summer and was baptized a few weeks ago. I know she had plans. I know she thought she had more tomorrows. I know she did not think she was close to the end of her days.
I’m reminded one more time not to waste life, not to take one day for granted, not to postpone joy, and not to miss the gift, paying attention to what matters, seeing each moment for what it is, reaching out to those who are placed in front of me, being generous with all I have, loving deeply, living healthy and whole, choosing to be humble and grateful to God for all things.
It requires an awareness of the gift of life, a willingness to change anything and everything to do what really matters, a choice to purposefully live the way God has planned:
For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. In those days when you pray, I will listen. If you look for me wholeheartedly, you will find me. I will be found by you,” says the Lord. “I will end your captivity and restore your fortunes. I will gather you out of the nations where I sent you and will bring you home again to your own land” (Jeremiah 29:11-13, NLT).
Look at what Jeremiah has said:
- God has a good plan of hope and a future.
- God will listen when you pray.
- God will be found when you seek with your whole heart.
- God will release you from the things holding you captive.
- God will restore you–giving you what has been planned for you–the gifts of life.
Living the best life God has planned comes down to making a daily choice. So. If, you only had a few more days-what would you do–who would you see–how would you live? Live the best life today.
