To be grateful, to intentionally give thanks every day, is a challenge for the month of November for me. I’ve found it’s a necessary component in my life in order to be physically, mentally, and spiritually healthy. And, it’s a vital component of how life is managed in faith, which is the message in I Thessalonians 5:18 (NLT): Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.
To be thankful in all circumstances is nothing less than a miracle.
When things are going well, I’m thankful. There’s no need to think about it, I’m thankful. But. When life is messy, inconvenient, and even down-right-difficult, I struggle with being thankful. Isn’t that true of most of us? We want life to be strung together with perfect circumstances. All the time.
There’s an art to being thankful. It requires an intentional refocusing by giving thanks at all times, taking the focus off of self and the circumstances, recognizing God to be the Giver. It’s humbling, isn’t it? At times, it takes great strength to say thank you for everything.
Today: I’m thankful. Period. Nothing attached to it. Thankful–giving thanks to God for everything.
